![]() In addition to the largely female cast, the series was created by Laeta Kalogridis. Season 2, streaming on Netflix, has 8 episodes. The conflict over whether people should die a ‘real death’ when their time is up or be resleeved to live again is a central question. There are love stories and philosophical moments. The series is action packed, complicated, and interspersed with human moments and interactions. When I heard Simone Missick was part of the main cast, I gave it another chance. I almost didn’t watch season 2 because of that very problem in season 1. Living forever apparently doesn’t bring up any new weapon ideas.ĭespite the heavily female cast, there’s a lot of blood and violence in Altered Carbon. This world is full of flashy, creative, high tech ideas, but the characters still carry around metal guns that shoot body-mangling bullets. She and Poe develop a thing, which is the sweetest part of this often violent and bloody drama. But Dig 301 (Dina Shihabi) comes into the story. The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Poe (Chris Conner) suffers from frequent glitches this season. Carrera was known as Jaeger in season 1 and worked to train Kovacs, the man he now seeks to kill. Carrera (Torben Liebrecht) to run her army. She wants rule the world unchecked by any outside power. ![]() She wants to kill Kovacs, Quell, Trepp, and anyone else in her way. Kovacs is involved in many parts of an ongoing rebellion lead by Quellcrist Falconer (Renée Elise Goldsberry). Trepp and Kovacs form a team, although each have different goals. Quell trained Kovacs, the last remaining Envoy, and is the love of his life. She and her wife run a business and have roots on the planet. Trepp the bounty hunterĬostarring with Kovacs this season is Simone Missick. We also see the original Kovacs (Will Yun Lee) in many episodes and occasional glimpse of Joel Kinnaman in the part as well. The premise of this futuristic sci-fi adventure is that a person’s stack (their personality and memories) can be inserted into any sleeve (body). In season 2 of Altered Carbon, Takeshi Kovacs is played by Anthony Mackie. As in season 1, it’s a complex sci-fi drama with many characters’ stories interwoven. Though in fairness, Altered Carbon is such a retread of The Matrix in so many ways that it's a good thing, in the long run, the Wachowskis pursued far more creatively challenging projects instead.Altered Carbon, season 2, puts Takeshi Kovacs 300 years in the future on a planet run by a money grubbing President. (There's probably an alternate universe where the Wachowskis are behind the adaptation of Altered Carbon, and it's a much better TV show. It's the sort of idea that other creators haven't been afraid to explore: A fun bit of Matrix trivia is the fact that the original plan for Switch was to have the character played by a man in "real life" and then played by a woman while inside the Matrix - an idea deemed too much for 1999, but the kind of concept that viewers in 2020 would be more than able to handle. But in Season Two, the very few times a character occupies a sleeve that differs from their previously established gender happen as part of a ruse they quickly return to their previous side of the supposed gender binary. This definitely stands out in relation to gender, an issue which you would think would be privy to a certain level of fluidity given the ease with which one can choose the body they occupy. Unfortunately, his primary predecessor didn't leave him much to work with: The character is more often than not a stoic cypher who, in theory, is supposed to be both empathic and charismatic, but those qualities rarely come through. Kovacs swaps bodies with some frequency, which is how Anthony Mackie inherits the role of Kovacs this season. Season Two begins much like Season One did, with a murder mystery - however, the mystery quickly deepens with the introduction of far bigger issues, as seems to be the pattern when Kovacs gets caught up in such drama. Quellcrest, the original creator of stacks, was also the revolutionary leader who saw the damage done to the human spirit by the supposed cheating of death, and tried to find a way to restore people's mortality so that instead of existing, people might live. Hip-deep in this mess is Takashi Kovacs, a former badass soldier who, after the events of season one, is traveling from planet to planet on a singular quest - tracking down his long-lost love Quellcrest Falconer (always played by Renee Elise Goldsberry).
